Scary Pockets is a funk band that releases weekly music videos and covers, in pursuit of the funk. The band was founded in 2014 by Ryan Lerman and Jack Conte, who are also the core members and producers of the project. They are joined by a rotating roster of the best session musicians, singers and engineers in the Los Angeles music scene, creating a diverse and dynamic sound that blends funk, soul, jazz, rock and pop.
Scary Pockets is not just a band, but also a platform for showcasing the talent and creativity of the LA music community. The band collaborates with various artists, such as Ben Folds, Maiya Sykes, India Carney, Louis Cato, Lucy Schwartz, and many more, to reinterpret popular songs from different genres and eras with a funky twist. Some of their most viewed covers on YouTube include “Etta James x Lauryn Hill mashup”, “I Will Survive” by Gloria Gaynor, “Crazy” by Gnarls Barkley, and “Love on Top” by Beyoncé.
Scary Pockets also writes and performs original songs, such as “Easy on the Eyes” by David Ryan Harris, “80s Remix: Wonderwall” by Oasis, and “I Believe in a Thing Called Love” by The Darkness. The band experiments with different styles and influences, ranging from retro synth-pop to hard rock, while maintaining their signature groove and energy. The band also releases live albums and EPs, such as “Live at The Troubadour”, “Dead Wax”, and “Scary Goldings”, featuring some of their best live performances and collaborations.
