Early Life
Douglas spent his early years in Jamaica before moving to California and then to London as a teenager. He was passionate about soul music from a young age, drawing inspiration from legends like Sam Cooke and Otis Redding. His vocal talent was evident in his church performances, where he sang religious songs with a trained tenor voice.
Career
Douglas’ career took off in the United Kingdom. His iconic single “Kung Fu Fighting” was produced by British-Indian composer Biddu and sold over 11 million copies worldwide1. Despite its massive success, it overshadowed his other work, leading to his reputation as a one-hit wonder in the U.S., although he had other charting singles in the UK.
He was once managed by Eric Woolfson, who later became known for the Alan Parsons Project. In 1998, Douglas featured in a re-recording of “Kung Fu Fighting” with British dance act Bus Stop, which peaked at number 8 on the UK Singles Chart.
