He joined Motown in 1961, where he recorded duets with Mary Wells, Kim Weston, Tammi Terrell, and Diana Ross. He also had solo hits such as “I Heard It Through the Grapevine”, “What’s Going On”, “Let’s Get It On”, and “Sexual Healing”. He was known for his expressive and soulful voice, his social and political commentary, and his artistic independence and creativity. He died in 1984, after being shot by his father during an argument. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest singers and songwriters of all time
